Horton Towers
The 2 newly proposed towers at Horton Campus were recently announced on January 5th 2024 in the San Diego Union Tribune
One tower is to be mixed use on the space the Macy’s was before the closure of the mall, it will be the larger of the two towers. Construction is expected to start in Q2 2025 however permits have not yet been filed, and is expected to be complete in late 2027. This building is to have 518 housing units and ground floor retail.
The second tower is a residential only tower located on the site of a small surface lot and likely part of the parking garage at the back of Horton Campus along G Street, this tower has no date at this, is to be determined based on “market conditions”. This building will have 332 housing units.
These two towers are located in an ideal location. Tower One is facing north to Broadway, with many bus connections, and another block north is Civic Center Station with the MTS Blue and Orange Trolley lines. Tower Two is facing south to G Street and nearby the center of the Gaslamp Quarter
While researching we found there was a proposed amendment in 2002 on the site of 2nd tower, which would have used the surface lot, but was rejected due to taking the space of 124 parking spaces from that lot and the parking garage. It would have permitted an additional 400k square feet of hotel space to the mall, and potential residential use. So further densification of this large piece of land has been planned for decades. These 2 towers will fill a great spot in the center of Downtown San Diego.
