BuildSD officially endorses Measure G, which will help get TransNet back on track and deliver more transit projects across the region. We strongly support this funding infusion and its vision of an even better and more multimodal San Diego. The projects made possible by Measure G will make commutes faster, lower emissions, create more options for car-free and car-lite San Diegans, and create well-paying union jobs while delivering these vital projects. We believe it’s a necessary part of a transformed San Diego where we can solve our housing and mobility crises.
It’s no overstatement to say Measure G projects will be transformational. We’ll finally fund the Purple Line for fast, frequent rapid transit along the I-805 corridor, build an airport transit connector to make accessing the airport more convenient and equitable for all San Diegans, reinforce and solve fundamental issues with the Pacific Surfliner and COASTER rail lines between San Diego, Oceanside, and beyond to the county line, and create a great network of Rapid lines along San Diego's roads and highways. These projects, among many more, will allow for transit to directly reach the places you live, work, study, and visit.
We also recognize, however, that good transit isn’t just about building shiny new things. We commend the ability of Measure G to fund transit operations and state-of-good-repair measures throughout the system. Operations costs are vital in maintaining service and infrastructure for both transit and roads. Measure G will provide more money for this necessary maintenance, especially as some of San Diego’s older rapid transit infrastructure nears the end of its useful life.
San Diego has always been a trailblazer in modern American transit. We started the national light rail boom and created a successful and enduring rapid transit network that serves millions of trips a year. Just as TransNet funded a generation of transformational infrastructure projects - the Trolley extensions to SDSU, UCSD, and UTC, Rapid 225 and 235’s dedicated stations, and miles of double-tracking for mainline rail - Measure G will continue fighting for better transit across our region. Please vote yes on Measure G.
